South African personal income tax is a progressive tax system. Low income earners pay a far smaller fraction of their income as income tax than high income earners do. Up to a certain amount of income that depends on the their age, taxpayers pay no income tax at all.

Companies in South Africa, like in most other countries, are permitted to deduct a far wider range of expenses from their income when calculating income tax. As a result their tax affairs are usually far more complex than individual taxpayers'. While this calculator may be helpful to aspiring entrepeneurs, real businesses are probably smart enough not to rely on some dinky web calculator!
